Why Don't I See All of My Instagram Stories

Instagram only makes a Story available through its API for about 24 hours. Here's why some Stories go missing, and how to add them back by hand.

If a Story is missing from your report, it’s almost always one of three things. Here’s how to tell which, and what to do about each one.

The most common reason: the Story already expired on Instagram’s side

Instagram only exposes a Story through its API for about 24 hours after it’s posted — after that, Instagram itself no longer returns it to anyone, us included. We check for new Stories every 2 hours, so a Story that was posted and expired between two checks — or one that was posted before you connected your account to InfluenceKit — is gone before we ever had a chance to see it.

This one can’t be fixed by refreshing. If the 24-hour window has passed, there’s no API call that brings it back. The fix is to add it by hand — see How to add Expired or Missing Instagram Stories to a Report for the manual, screenshot-based path.

Your Instagram or Facebook connection died

If your connection to Instagram or the Facebook Page behind it stops working, we stop being able to check for new Stories at all — not just some of them, all of them, until you reconnect.

We watch for this using the same Story check that runs every 2 hours, so a broken connection is usually caught and flagged within about a day of it happening. When that happens, you’ll get an email, and your Connected Accounts page will show a “Connection is not valid” notice next to that account with a Reconnect Now button.

If you haven’t gotten that notice but still suspect your connection is the problem, check it yourself: go to Connected Accounts and confirm Instagram and Facebook both show as connected. See How to Edit the Facebook and Instagram Accounts Linked to InfluenceKit for the steps, or Problems connecting Instagram if the reconnection itself won’t go through.

Once you reconnect, any Stories still inside Instagram’s 24-hour window will come in on the next check. Anything that expired while you were disconnected falls back to the first reason above — add it by hand.

A one-off hiccup on Instagram’s side

Occasionally a single check to Instagram’s API fails for reasons that have nothing to do with your connection — a blip on Meta’s side. This doesn’t take your connection down; it just means that one check came back empty. The next check, 2 hours later, tries again automatically, so most of the time this resolves itself without you doing anything. We’re also tracking a pattern of these with Meta directly.

Still missing something?

If you’ve confirmed your connection is active and it’s been more than a day since the Story was posted, reach out to our support team via chat and let us know which Story and roughly when it was posted — we’re happy to dig in.
